Montferrer (a 2 minute drive away or 30 minute
walk) is a very small French village, but with many facilities,
including a church,
village
hall,
a small shop/bar and a restaurant (called Le Diamant Noir). It
also has some spectacular views down the Vallespir valley
over to Spain.
In addition it has an open-air swimming pool
(open in July and August), a tennis court, crazy golf and
of course
a court
for pétanque (boules).
The community has 258 inhabitants of which
20-25 actually live in the village.
The church, Saint-Marie, is
a Romanesque church from the 12th century and is classified as
a national historical monument.
The community has the narrowest
underground grottoes in the world, Gorges
de la Fou (the gorge
of the cascades in Catalan).
The
deepest point is 205 metres, and it takes about two hours
to walk the 1.5 Km
path.
