Can Llouquette is situated in the province of
Languedoc-Roussillon, which covers the departments (or counties)
of Lozère, Gard, Hérault, Aude and Pyrénées
Orientales.
Our department – the Pyrénées
Orientales – is
the southern-most region in France, with sunshine throughout the
summer and winter, averaging over 300 days per year!
At the heart
of this department - is the famous Mount Canigou (muntanya
regalada or 'fortunate mountain' in Catalan)
- which dominates the horizon from almost every vantage point.
Montferrer,
our nearest
village (at 1.5 miles away), is situated on the flanks of Mount
Canigou and approximately 30 miles from Perpignan.
Perpignan is
the capital of the department and has many historical monuments
dating from its hegemony as capital of the Majorcan kingdom
(1276-1344).
There are many other small
towns and famous cities within easy reach of
the house: Carcassone, Toulouse, Montpellier, Girona, and Barcelona.
Just
outside Perpignan, on the Côte Vermeille (this part
of the Mediterranean coast) are many beaches and secluded coves:
picturesque bays that are quite quiet even in the tourist season.
Following
the coast road further south there are many beautiful views continuing
on into Spain, and through seaside resorts along
the Spanish Mediterranean coast, towards Roses, and the beautiful
natural parks and beaches of the Costa Brava.
The inland landscape
of the Pyrénées Orientales is
low, undulating and covered with vineyards laid out like a carpet
before the impressive mountain massif. The views are exceptional.
Our
valley, the Vallespir, is the most southerly in France, and you
are literally a stones throw from Spain.
